Bourbon & Whiskey Bottles & Labels: Cask Strength
“Cask Strength” is the whiskey equivalent of turning the volume up to eleven. Most whiskeys are proofed down with water before bottling to make them more… let’s say, “approachable.” Cask strength expressions skip that step, giving you the spirit straight from the barrel, in all its high-proof glory.
Definition
Cask strength, or barrel proof, means the whiskey is bottled at the same alcohol by volume (ABV) it had while aging in the barrel. There’s no dilution. Because factors like evaporation (the “angel’s share”) affect the liquid during maturation, the final proof can be even higher than when it first went into the cask. This is whiskey in its purest, most untamed form. It’s the unfiltered, unapologetic version of your favorite spirit.
Why does it matter?
Because you’re getting more bang for your buck, both in terms of alcohol and flavor. Diluting whiskey with water inevitably changes its chemical makeup and can mute some of the more delicate flavor compounds. Cask strength bourbon offers a richer, more concentrated, and complex tasting experience. It’s a direct line to the distiller’s original intent. Sure, it might singe your nose hairs if you’re not prepared, but the depth of caramel, oak, and spice is unparalleled. It also gives you, the sophisticated drinker, the power to proof it down yourself with a few drops of water to see how the flavors evolve.
How OAKR helps
Tasting cask strength whiskey is a wild ride, and everyone’s palate picks up something different. One person’s “robust notes of cherry and leather” is another’s “jet fuel with a hint of vanilla.” The OAKR app cuts through the noise.
