Bourbon & Whiskey Bottles & Labels: Bottled in Bond (BiB)
So you’re staring at a wall of whiskey, one term you might see is “Bottled in Bond” or “BiB.” No, it’s not a secret society, it’s a mark of quality that’s been around since your great-great-grandpa was complaining about the price of horse feed.
Definition
Bottled in Bond is basically the U.S. government’s seal of approval, guaranteeing the whiskey inside isn’t snake oil mixed with turpentine and brown food coloring. To earn this label, the spirit must be the product of one distillery, from one distilling season, aged for at least four years in a federally bonded warehouse, and bottled at exactly 100 proof (50% ABV). It’s a list of rules so strict, it makes your HOA look reasonable.
Why does it matter?
Back in the 1800s, some “distillers” were selling rectified spirits that could probably strip paint. To combat this Wild West of whiskey, the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897 was passed. It was a consumer protection law that ensured what you were buying was authentic, properly aged whiskey. Today, it’s a sign that the distiller is proud of their product and isn’t cutting corners. It’s a baseline of quality that tells you you’re getting a robust, flavorful, and honest pour without any funny business.
How OAKR helps
While “Bottled in Bond” guarantees a certain standard, it doesn’t tell you if you’ll actually like the flavor. Will it be caramel and vanilla, or will it taste like you’re chewing on a smoldering oak branch? Everyone’s palate is different. That’s where OAKR comes in. The app aggregates tasting data from blind tasting panelists to give you a clear picture of a spirit’s flavor profile before you spend your hard-earned cash. Explore the OAKR app to discover in-depth flavor profiles and get personalized recommendations that match your unique taste.
