Your palate is completely unique. Your diet, genetics, sense of smell and how you live everyday can affect your tastebuds and how sensitive they are. You’re a beautiful sense sensation, no one knows what you like better than you do. We want to help point you in the right direction, especially when it comes to bourbon. OAKR is a one of a kind data lead approach to taste preferences. We’ve gone through the painstaking process to sample, test and categorically grade spirits based on a panel of independent blind tasters, and factoring in flavor details from distillers themselves. Our app is designed to give you a simple way to know what a bourbon tastes like, and ways to provide more info to your profile to customize your taste preferences and discover more. Let’s unpack more about OAKR’s flavor profiles, and the colored labels that showcase the prominent categories of each bourbon.
OAKR’s platform is powered by our own proprietary data system, used to standardize bourbon and spirit flavors. For each spirit listed on OAKR, there are over 100 detailed flavor notes that are graded for intensity. Each of these flavors are grouped within the 10 primary categories seen within the OAKR spirit profile chart.
Users can explore all the detailed flavor notes for each spirit, by scrolling down the spirit page. Here you can find all the related flavor notes, and find even more info on what you’re about to try.
The colored labels applied to each spirit within OAKR showcase the most prominent flavor category of a spirit. If for example, a spirit has the green “Earthy” label applied to it, this spirit will be earthy forward, and contains a mixture of multiple flavors that outweigh the flavors from other categories.
Does that mean this bourbon only tastes Earthy? Hell no. It just means that of all the flavors, this category came out to be the strongest across the board. Bourbons are complex, and the distillation process, aging process and how it is mixed and bottled all affect the final flavors. Certain bourbons will be balanced between categories, but each will still show only one prominent flavor label.
Users of OAKR can engage with spirits and add favorite bourbons to their accounts. Doing so triggers our algorithm , to crunch the data from your included spirits, and customize your own personalized flavor preferences. The more spirits you engage with and add to your profile, the more detailed your flavor chart will become.
Similar to the individual profiles, your personalized flavor profile will have a colored category label to identify the most prominent flavor you tend to skew towards.
Does this mean you ONLY like a single flavor or category? Hell no. It just means that based on the data provided to your account, this is the overarching flavor category you most connect with.
Your personalized flavor profile and color is far more complex than just the 10 categories you include. It’s entirely possible that adding many spirits with one common primary flavor label, can make your personalized flavor chart something different. That’s because our system aggregates all the included data from the spirits, not just the macro level metrics. Certain spirits you’ve added to your profile might be balanced between two or more categories.
OAKR was built by certified bourbon professionals and industry experts. We crafted our process to create the most comprehensive data available, and provide V1 of an algorithm to provide personalized recommendations.
Does that mean our recommendations are perfect? Hell no. We have a long way to go, both in adding more spirits for users to explore, and in the best ways to ensure users find bourbons that they absolutely love. By using OAKR, you can help us find the best new features to build, and provide feedback on what’s working and what’s not. Help us make bourbon exploration even better in the future.
