These days data makes the world go round. The more detail you can have within a system, the more it can be leveraged to help out users. It’s the exact approach we’re taking with OAKR and the launch of our beta app. Users can sign up today, create a free account, and start exploring the world of bourbon. And even better, personalizing their profiles for custom recommendations on what they should try. OAKR comes complete with our own algorithm, to make sense of our flavor data for each spirit, and understand what users like most. Let’s take a look at our recommendations, and what they mean for users.
Every spirit listed on OAKR has completed a full tasting process through a panel of blind tasters. Each spirit is then graded across 10 categories of flavors, comprised of over one hundred detailed flavors, ranging in intensity. This is then paired with information from distillers themselves, to provide a complete picture of how a spirit tastes. This data is then utilized to help users find what they like, and for our algorithm to then understand taste preferences and similar spirits.

User of OAKR can simply explore what data is available per spirit, or generate their own personalized flavor profile by adding spirits to their accounts. By favoriting a spirit, it will automatically add to your profile, where our algorithm will analyze the data and what flavors are included. Doing so enables our system to understand what you really like about a bourbon, and find other matches in our system that are a good fit.
You can engage in others ways too, leave a review for the community, dislike a spirit, add it to a list, or take your own notes about flavors and your drinking experience.
Once you login, you’ll see a list of spirits you should try based on what you told OAKR you like. From here you can buy directly from online retailers, or explore more about the spirit and see other related bourbons based on their included flavors.
You may see recommendations for spirits that don’t match the same color of bourbons you’ve added to your profile. “I only like Sweet bourbons, why am I seeing spirits that are Grain forward?” There’s a reason for that.
Bourbon recommendations are based on the full list of detailed flavors they include, their intensity AND the primary category flavors they have. As such, adding spirits to your profile, our algorithm may identify a detailed flavor common across all of them, and match you with spirits that have similar tastes.

Seeing something in OAKR that you’re not a fan of? On the spirit profile page under “actions”, users can dislike a spirit to remove it from their profile. Doing so further enhances your algorithm to understand more flavors you like and want to avoid.
The beta version of OAKR is now live, complete with tons of features and ways to help bourbon fans explore new spirits out there. We have a lot of work on our plates to make sure we include more spirits, better features and ways for users to find the best fit for them. Sign up today and you can help us better understand what’s working, and what needs refinement.
