Bourbon & Whiskey Types: Single Malt Scotch
Definition
Single Malt Scotch is a type of whisky that has some very strict, very Scottish rules. To earn this title, the spirit must be made at a single distillery in Scotland. It’s produced using only water and malted barley, and it’s distilled in a pot still through batch distillation. While the legal minimum for aging is three years, most self-respecting distilleries let it rest in oak casks for much longer.
Why does it matter?
For a bourbon drinker, dipping a toe into Single Malt Scotch can feel like visiting a foreign country. While your beloved bourbon uses a corn-heavy mash bill (at least 51%) and new charred oak barrels, Scotch is all about that malted barley. This ingredient swap is a big deal. It often results in flavors that are less sweet and more earthy, smoky, or floral compared to bourbon’s typical caramel and vanilla notes. Some Scotches, particularly from Islay, are famous for a peaty, smoky flavor that some describe as “medicinal” or “a campfire in a glass.” Is it for everyone? Absolutely not. But if you’re looking to expand your palate beyond the American heartland, it’s a required field trip.
