Bourbon & Whiskey Tasting: Finishing

Definition

Let’s cut through the pretension. You swallow the whiskey. The liquid is gone. What happens next? That’s the “Finishing” or, more commonly, the “Finish.” It is the lingering sensation, flavor, and physical feeling left in your mouth and throat after the spirit has headed south.

While the “Nose” is the movie trailer and the “Palate” is the feature film, the Finish is the ending. It’s either a glorious, lingering sunset that makes you ponder the meaning of life, or it’s a jarring, ethanol-fueled jump scare that makes you regret your life choices. It is a subjective evaluation of length (short, medium, long) and texture (oily, drying, burning), often referred to affectionately as the “Kentucky Hug” when it provides a warm, pleasant sensation in the chest.

Why does it matter?

Because you paid for it, that’s why. If you drop $80 on a bottle that tastes like vanilla for two seconds and then vanishes like a magician’s assistant, you got ripped off.

The finish is where the whiskey’s quality often hides. It exposes the production flaws that a sweet nose might mask. A high-quality bourbon, usually one with a higher proof or better aging, will cling to your palate. This is where the distillation process and bottling proof come into play. Spirits watered down to 80 proof (40% ABV) often suffer from a watery, short finish. Conversely, unfiltered or barrel-strength whiskeys retain the fatty acids and esters from the barrel, creating a finish that sticks around for minutes, evolving from spice to sweet oak long after the glass is empty. If a distiller messed up their cuts or rushed the aging, the finish is where you’ll taste the bitter tannins or the metallic funk of youth.

How OAKR helps

Here is the problem: your “smooth finish” might be my “boring water,” and my “complex, spicy finish” might be your “liquid fire.” Taste is subjective, and trusting the marketing notes on the back of a bottle is a rookie mistake.

OAKR stops you from flying blind. Instead of relying on a single liquor store clerk who just wants to sell you the shelf-turd of the week, OAKR aggregates tasting data from actual users and blind panels. We do the legwork to tell you if that new bottle has a finish that lasts for days or if it falls off a cliff the moment you swallow.

Stop guessing and start drinking better. Download the OAKR app to discover deep flavor profiles and get recommendations tailored specifically to your palate.
